David Wilson has been involved in the transport industry for his whole career spanning nearly 4 decades, with over 15 years in fleet management roles followed by 20+ years in management consultancy, including spells as an interim manager.

Gaining initial manufacturing experience in Special Vehicles, a small division within Ford Motor Company, who sponsored him to gain an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, before obtaining wide-ranging logistics management experience for United Biscuits Distribution. Then followed periods spent improving fleet management for both Tate & Lyle and Philips Electronics before progressing into consultancy.

As a consultant, he has helped many organisations improve their fleet & operational management with extensive experience in the public sector including Fire Services, the Police Force and a number of London Boroughs.

In the private sector he has worked for many well-known organisations such as Hovis, Serco and the RAC, often saving many millions of pounds in annual fleet costs.

He has also been a consultant for a number of years with government organisations such as the Dti (now BIS) as a Technology Translator in a Knowledge Transfer Network and the Energy Saving Trust; helping their clients improve efficiency and save money by reducing their fuel use and hence carbon output.

His specialism is to focus on improving operational performance and reducing costs in areas such as asset procurement, workshop management, operational performance and fleet management information systems. He has often project managed the outcome of reviews in order to obtain tangible results and faster savings for the client.

As part of the efficiency portfolio, his company Fleet Technology (www.fleettechnology.co.uk) currently manages fuel saving for clients, mainly through coaching of staff using the customer’s telematics equipment fitted to vehicles, saving considerable fuel costs by improving driver behaviour, using highly refined eco-driving techniques.

ABOUT

The DW Consultancy

The DW Consultancy has been serving a wide variety of transport and logistics clients for over 24 years, from Blue Chip private sector companies to public sector organisations such as London Boroughs, the Police and the Fire Services.

In its early days. the DW Consultancy was an associate consultant for most of the ‘big six’ consultancy houses such as Coopers & Lybrand, KPMG and Price Waterhouse; helping to cement good consulting disciplines.

Over time. the Consultancy has continued to forge links with a number of the better logistics consultancies to ensure specialist expertise in all areas is available when required. In more recent years, it has also built up a network of specialist technology firms, such as mapping companies, routing and scheduling system suppliers, telematics suppliers and fleet management system suppliers in order to ensure cutting edge tools are used whenever this proves cost effective.

Contracts for government sponsored organisations such as the Knowledge Transfer Networks and the Energy Savings Trust also helped keep the Consultancy on top of the latest technology, utilising the latest techniques and principles.

The shear breadth of transport sectors covered in this time is pretty impressive, including aircraft grounds handling equipment, oil exploration, vehicle rescue services, all areas of waste including recycling, general haulage, specialist gas vehicles, the food industry, events handling, road construction, wet & dry tanker operations, emergency blue light fleets, fuel tankers, pharmaceutical; the list goes on and on.

This depth of understanding can be applied to all client assignments, giving a large databank of knowledge and ideas from which to draw upon when seeking solutions to current day issues and problems.

We would argue our eagerness to project manage the change process based upon the solutions we offer means that our recommendations are more realistic than most consultancies, who often merely advise. Certainly, continuous improvement and change management has been a constant throughout our work.
